    Here's the thing... I really don't care if white people keep making media about white people. The issue is that people of color aren't getting the chance to tell their own stories. Hiring writers of color, funding directors of color, etc. is leagues more important than teaching white people how to write.

    I wish I saw this sooner. I was late diagnosed autistic and my bf always identified me as a manic pixie dream girl although I never knew what it meant or how it was perceived by men as just a woman who momentarily served their needs and let go of that woman. I do not have any mental illness just autism and he did end up violating me and seeing me as more vulnerable because of my 'childlike innocence". But another thought is woman ever NOT reduce down to just one conecpet? How do I become 'normal" and not manic pixie dream girl...

    I also like those kinds of characters. For me, it's more about existential questions. These are nihilistic characters who are looking for meaning in their lives. Even if they switch their positions from wrong to right, or right to wrong, in their lives, not much changes. For me, it's more about seeing a character discovering moral ambiguity.

    Sadly it has often been like this, especially in the past. Witness the horrible impersonation of a Japanese man by Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's. When in the 30s and 40s, Hollywood decided to bring one of the greatest fictional detectives, Charlie Chan, to the big screen, they went with all white actors to fill the role - the first three being Werner Oland (Swedish-American),Sydney Toler (American) and Roland Winters (American). Even in later years, white actors like Peter Ustinov and Ross Martin got the role and that was in the 70s and 80s !!! The villains didn't get away either as in 1980 English actor Peter Sellers played the title role in the "Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu" and in 1961 Christopher Lee played the evil Tong leader, Chung king in "Terror of the Tongs". I was genuinely surprised and pleased to discover that the iconic Chinese-American actor, Keye Luke ,actually voiced the title role in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan" (1972) (he also played Number 1 son in many of the Charlie Chan films and was the Venerable Master Po in the Kung Fu series)(Side note however, one of the myriad of children that Chan had in the series (another Hollywood stereotype) was voiced by actress Jodie Foster)

    Let me get this right... A pick me girl is a girl that recognize that women today mostly shit and that feminism as been a utter and total failure. And so, she doesn't adhere to the common misbehaviors and tries to be better... This pisses off the normal women who call her a ''pick me'' just like they call a man who criticizes them an ''incel''... Like observing the objective fact that women, in this day in age, are mostly shit is sexism lol. OK, Got it...

    I personally thought season 2 was more of a love fantasy, or any fantasy. It had many moments that were a bit too much of a stretch. I absolutely loved the first season. I can understand from Phoebe’s perspective why she would write 2nd season like that, fantasy sorts again. Maybe because not many yes sirs or ma’ams were present on the first one. The second was again, more like a fantasy, the better men for the main girls had no shortcomings of their own, were just plain perfect beautiful men for those women, this is just an example but overall some of the writing and scenarios were iffy . Except only the first episode, 2nd season was a big disappointment.

  • @michaeldriver127
    @michaeldriver127 Месяц назад

    Another example of the term racist being misused. Stereotyping/prejudice, as usual, the more appropriate and less misleading word choice here. A racist is in a "race", a kind of competition. They want to put down a race other than their own- which is often used in derogative language. These examples shown and reviewed are only racist when you want them to be. Go to Japan. The Japanese people do these things pointed out amongst other Japanese people. You can't be racist against the same ethnicity you are connected to. Misleading content here and very over examined.

    Disorders such as Autism, ADHD, and bipolar disorder aren't mental illnesses, but they are types of neurodiversity. I don't think that the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" is quite the same thing as having one of these disorders, if she only exists to attract the male gaze and help the male character discover a sense of purpose. And while women with mental disorders, including myself (I'm on the Autism Spectrum) might seem childlike, we're also capable of being mature and empathetic to others. Being "quirky" and having a diagnosed mental condition are two different things.

    I'm not offocially diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, but my family and I have always suspected I might be on the spectrum (a speech therapist also suspected I might be autistic when I was little). I'm a generally happy person, and people notice this about me; they see that I have lots of energy, pace around + think a lot, have very focused interests, am a little naïve at times/can't understand sarcasm, and am kind of in my own little world. In this case, I have always sort of related to the MPDG characters and their individuality. But I've never liked how some of them seem to exist only for men, or are fetishized. I agree with this video: I like aspects of the MPDG, but not if they're written only for the male protagonist. Also, I feel slightly bad that the man who coined the term had to apologize, because it's not his fault that people are misusing the term. He created the term during a time when the Manic Pixie Dream Girl was a common trope in romance movies, and he wanted to call out the unfairness of this trope, but people on the internet will often take things too far. I don't think he meant for the MPDG term to be thrown around carelessly like it is.

    I like this video, and I understand the point you were trying to make. I think people hear you call someone privileged and think it’s a bad thing rather than a neutral observation, and it’s fair that people can find it not as relatable or even off-putting if they don’t have that same privilege. Maybe a thing I would’ve pointed out also is that brown/Black media with similar storylines (like the movie’s inspiration, “Real Women Have Curves”) don’t get the same level of praise and attention which could suggest that the character’s whiteness (as in, white lifestyle/culture) is a central reason why people may relate to her rather than exclusively the mother-daughter relationship thing.

    Goddammit. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people. It's that simple. We are people and men are people, no better and no worse. No more or less deserving as a group or a class or subset of people. Individually, we are still just people.

I'll give the example of Tim Gunn, the boys of the Queer Eye show and even Patrick Schwaze's character in the film Queen of the Desert. They enchant me with their sensitivity and delicacy. I also admire the relationship between mothers and their gay sons - maybe I am guessing wrong, but they seem to have a lot of fun together!

    I hate to be that guy but, patriarchy does not exist (at least in the west), the expectations put on men and women comes from evolutionary biology and capitalism wish are different things, this doesn't mean sexism doesn't exist, it does (both mmisoginyst AND misandry) and yes , that affects men and women. In regards to this movies nobody truly believes they are the same as the characters in those movies, its just memes and irony nothing else, exept for me of course because I am Ryan Reynolds

    Loads of the girls in my school act like and worse than lady bird. She’s a rebellious teenager who’s made to be fraud but ultimately comes past it. She understands her flaws still making mistakes but trying to overcome them.also how can anyone hate it. The movies a masterpiece.
